That moment when you’re checking out tumblr and stumble across a reblog of a music video you were one of the ADs on only a matter of weeks ago…

Yeah, that just happened. here’s that Paramore music video I mentioned a few weeks ago that I was 2nd Assistant Director on. Shot in one day in Austin, TX on near the UT campus during SXSW. Most of the crew was Austin based. This was a super fun shoot. Not into the music, but it’s a fun video and I’m psyched to have been a part of it.

EDIT: the production design was all Austin based folks, several of whom are dear friends of mine…

also, I had no hand in hiring PAs for this, unfortunately. I was just the 2nd ;)

Tonight I was shooting b-roll of the Spring Breakers red carpet for SXSW Pro Media crew and I happened to snap some fortunate photos of a very frustrated James Franco.

Good News Everyone!

A Teacher, which is a film I associate produced and 1st AD’d last year has been picked up by Oscilloscope!!! First, Sundance, and then SXSW and now distribution! Congrats to director/producer Hannah Fidell and everyone who helped to put this project together!!!

Total Film's Top 30 Sundance Favorites... and at #8 on their list... A Teacher! ⇢

Congratulations to the cast and crew of A Teacher, which I was a co-producer and 1st AD on back in January of last year (scroll back far enough and you’ll find some postings from when we were filming).

Both A Teacher and Pit Stop (another feature in Sundance I 1st AD’d) did very well at Sundance this year. I sadly did not get a chance to go, but I am super excited for both the directors and everyone involved. We worked hard on both films to make them happen and the recognition couldn’t happen to any better folks. <3

Hey everyone!
So the two films I 1st AD’d are at Sundance currently. Above is a still from a feature I was 1st on in June called Pit Stop. Here’s an AWESOME article in the NYtimes about it and the Texas Independent film scene. Please reblog this and bring quality film production to Texas.
HIRE US! We get shit done :)

It is with much excitement that I announce…

Not one, but TWO features I was a 1st AD on this year are going to Sundance (part of the Next category)!!!!

I was also an associate producer on one of the features, A Teacher, which we shot back in January.

The other feature, Pit Stop, was shot back in June.

I also dayplayed as an additional 2nd AD onHeadhunterwhich is also going to Sundance.

All of these films were predominantly Austin & Dallas based crews. Congrats to the Texas indie film crews and casts for all your hard work and making this a great state to shoot in! And big congrats to the directors, producers, crews, and casts of Pit Stop & A Teacher!!!

Seeking Volunteer PAs for a feature film in Nov/Dec - Austin/Corpus/Van Horn/Gonzales

Straight from my (ugh) craigslist ad (and yes, I am 1st AD on this project and my 2nd, my 2nd 2nd, and I all hire PAs on a pretty regular basis for paid work).

We are seeking a Few Good Folks who are available during November/December to help on a feature film as a set PA. You’ll be trained to help with set PA duties such as lockup, handling talent & extras, maintaining production supplies, and you’ll probably get covered in fake blood at some point. THIS IS A VOLUNTEER POSITION. We are NOT asking anyone to be involved for the full run of the production (but you are welcomed to!). You tell us when you’re available. If you’re interested in getting into film production and have a couple days here and there during production to come out and lend a hand, we’d love to have you. Assistant Directors do hire hard working volunteer PAs for paid work for various productions in features, shorts, commercials, music videos & TV shows and you’ll be working under an experienced crew who work full time in the industry here in Austin and Dallas.

Production is a western mostly shooting in the Austin area and there is some travel involved for those of you interested in traveling with us (accommodations and transpo will be provided). Shooting on Red EPIC.

Please let us know if you’re interested! We’d love to have you - just drop us a line with your past film experience and what you’re interested in doing film wise.

And that’s a picture wrap!

So our final night of filming was not without its historical moments.

Our 300 lb 1st AC, fed up with a severe lack of proper lock up happening, stormed over with a bright LED flashlight to a white truck that had decided to awkwardly park itself in our shot. A woman jumps out of the side of the truck with her hands up yelling about how “we’s just resting and shit” and she disappears into the park with her john following her claiming they were just pulling over because he was tired.

Oh Look, I was interviewed for a podcast! ⇢

My film friends pinned me down and made me talk on their podcast about ADing, filmmaking, and general rabble-rousing. Please, give a listen! And give my friends a thumbs up!

What did I get for Christmas? NOTHING. ok, some clothes from dear ol’ mom.

But seriously. Good riddance to the Holidays. Back to the effing work. Here’s some photos I took from today’s location scout. More to come. Occupy film sets.

I will not only be around for SXSW, I am a shooter for the festival and will be rocking a Platinum badge (hehehehe)
I’d love to meet up with anyone, so if you wanna get a beer at some point, I’m totally down…

I’ve had the pleasure of working with Meredith twice now. great lady, her and her team do fantastic work!

AND UH… OBVIOUSLY YOU ALL SHOULD BE PLANNING YOUR NEXT PRODUCTION IN AUSTIN NOW. I mean, duh. :)

AUSTIN BASED MOVIES YOU SHOULD ALL SEE/SUPPORT:

The Tree of Life’s trailer is FINALLY out. This was shot in and around Austin & Smithville, TX just before I moved to Texas. So many people I know worked on this and it looks incredible. The coolest part is that I will get to film in the classroom they used in this film for my short, Food Fight.

Another Austin based film about to come out?

Another one a shit ton of my friends worked on. So very excited to see this!

SO OBVIOUSLY, THE CONCLUSION I AM MAKING HERE IS THAT FOLKS SHOULD BE FILMING IN TEXAS BECAUSE WE HAVE AWESOME FUCKING CREW AND LOCATIONS AND PEOPLE. SO OBVIOUSLY, YOU SHOULD BE BRINGING PROJECTS HERE. LIKE, NOW.

OMG IT'S A FILM PRODUCTION BLOG

Assistant Directors don't always yell. Sometimes we write about stuff. Because I'm a workaholic, I sometimes feel the need to document the things I see and the questions that are raised while going through the most insane process of making a director's dreams come true. About me: My name is Michelle. I am a (currently) non-union First Assistant Director working out of Austin, TX. I hope to one day join the DGA and direct my own scripts on the side, but until that time comes... Got questions? Comments? Complaints? A project you want me to AD? (I'm cheap!)
